How good is your ‘warranty’?

Most surgeons provide follow-up at no charge for their patients when dealing with issues related to the procedure done.  At my old place of employment, this was offered as a ‘lifetime’ benefit.  Since I’ve left, I offer courtesy follow-up for as long as I am in practice.  With my old colleagues nearing the age of retirement, what does this mean for you if your doctor is no longer available 2 years after your procedure?  Unless someone purchases the practice, you essentially have no warranty for follow-up.  Theoretically that is a breach of contract.   Its always nicer to know that your surgeon will be around if and when issues arise in the future.  Just something to think about when choosing your surgeon.
